Admin HUMAN RESOURCES Positions:

Human Resources Director (internal hire)

Department: Human Resources

Reports To: Executive Director

Hours: 16 per week

Paid: $16 per hour           

The Human Resources Director is responsible for developing and executing HR strategies that support the overall goals and mission of the Minnesota Daily. They oversee all aspects of the HR function, including recruitment, employee development, performance management, and employee relations. The HR Director ensures compliance with applicable employment laws and regulations and serves as an advisor to department and division leaders on HR-related matters. They lead the HR team, fostering a positive and inclusive environment while driving organizational success through evolving people management practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the organization and maintenance of employee information via ADP and other systems
  • Collaborate with business units to source, develop, and retain the best talent
  • Communicate organizational values, policies, and practices with all employees
  • Create and lead all-staff meetings and trainings with OP members
  • Supervise and develop human resources staff members
  • Analyze employee data to make continuous organizational improvements
  • Address all employee-relation concerns that arise promptly
  • Supervise performance management system by maintaining job descriptions and administering performance reviews semiannually
  • Work with OP members to research and develop new policies and procedures
  • Update employee handbook and policies annually
  • Ensure compliance with legal regulations, including EEO and OSHA

Assistant Human Resources Director (internal hire)

Department: Human Resources

Reports To: Human Resources Director

Hours: 12 per week

Paid: $15 per hour

The Assistant Human Resources Director is responsible for providing support and assistance to the Human Resources Director in overseeing all aspects of the human resources function within the Minnesota Daily. They play a key role in developing and implementing HR policies, procedures, and initiatives that align with the Daily’s mission. Additionally, they engage with department management to ensure effective recruitment practices, employee relations, and performance management.

Responsibilities:

  • Onboard and welcome new Daily staff members
  • Update and maintain employee information and staff records
  • Monitor staffing levels and recruit new talent when necessary
  • Help digitize and standardize human resources practices
  • Update and maintain job descriptions
  • Manage jobs page and postings

The Chief Diversity Officer at the Minnesota Daily is responsible for leading the organization’s diversity and inclusion commitments, including ensuring diverse representation and inclusive talent practices throughout the organization, as well as organizing D&I training and conversations for employees at Daily. This position will work collaboratively across the organization to educate, engage and create momentum in relation to Daily’s diversity & inclusion culture and values.

Responsibilities:

  • Help assist and lead internal and external events (Ex: Open House or Tabling events, staff gatherings, etc.)
  • Reach out to speakers or representatives to speak on DEI
  • Build relationships with UMN student organizations
  • Regularly review and evaluate EOA form results, employee exit survey feedback, and other HR demographic forms
  • Consult journalism professionals on best practices for diversifying newsrooms

Human Resources Associates is a great introductory role to human resources that provides support to the HR department. They assist with organization recruitment, including the management of applications and coordinating onboarding sessions. They also help maintain employee records and assist with employee development and engagement opportunities for Daily employees. Associates may also participate in HR projects and initiatives to support the overall HR function within the Minnesota Daily.

Admin FINANCE Positions:

Controller (internal hire)

Department: Finance

Reports To: General Manager

Hours: 15/week. Work must be performed in the office during normal business hours (9-5, M-F).

Paid: $16/hr

The Controller – Finance is one of five staff members who make up the finance department of the Minnesota Daily, the independent student-run campus news organization at the University of Minnesota. The finance department is responsible for the financial management and health of the entire organization and works with other departments to manage the budget, revenue, expenses, payroll, accounting, and all financial activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain company general ledger through Quickbooks
  • Supervise the creation of GL entries by accountants
  • Produce monthly financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement)
  • Work with Controller – Budget to coordinate actual revenue/expenses reporting with budget
  • Attend monthly meetings to present a monthly report to the board of directors
  • Reconcile bank statements
  • Monitor bank balances and investment account; consult with an investment adviser
  • Work with an outside accounting firm to produce annual audit, tax reports
  • Respond to inquiries from outside agencies
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Must be a University of Minnesota student

  • Working knowledge of MS Excel; experience with Quickbooks desired

The General Accountant positions are two of four staff members who make up the finance department at the Minnesota Daily, the independent student-run news organization at the University of Minnesota. The Finance Department is responsible for the financial management and health of the entire organization and works with other departments to manage budget, revenue, expenses, payroll, accounting, and all financial activities.

Responsibilities:

● Assist with bi-weekly and monthly payroll in ADP and required payroll journal entries
● Assist with processes of accounts payable, creating checks and completing month end processes
● Assist with processes of accounts receivable, depositing checks at the bank and completing month end reconciliations
● Complete tasks assigned by the controller and assistant controller
● Attend weekly Finance meetings
● Other duties as assigned

MN Daily ALUMNI RELATIONS Positions:

Alumni Relations Director (applications OPEN)

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and MDAA President to design and structure the Minnesota Daily Alumni Association Advisory Board and its functions 
  • Act as the liaison between MDAA Advisory Board and current staff
  • Work closely with the MDAA Advisory Board to achieve its mission and objectives
  • Facilitate MDAA mentoring and networking program with current staff
  • Create and execute alumni fundraising initiatives in collaboration with the General Manager and Fundraising Chair

Alumni Relations Development Specialist (applications OPEN)

The Alumni Relations Development Specialist plans two yearly donation drives for the Minnesota Daily and Minnesota Daily Alumni Association (MDAA). The Development Specialist works in conjunction with the MDAA Fundraising Chair to plan these gratuitous giving events, among other duties. The Minnesota Daily is looking for individuals that can not only fill the role but improve upon it.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the MDAA Fundraising Chair to manage all MDAA fundraising projects 
  • Research fundraising techniques within other non-profits and alumni associations 
  • Develop and execute innovative fundraising strategies in collaboration with the MDAA Fundraising Chair and the Alumni Relations Director
  • Collaborate, develop, and administer a continuous giving fundraising campaign
  • Collaborate with the MN Daily Board of Directors for the execution of the Minnesota Daily’s Give to the Max Day yearly initiative
  • Research and identify potential funding opportunities through grants and foundations
  • Assist with the development and telling of the Daily’s dynamic story and train students and volunteers to share this message

Alumni Relations Mentorship Associate (applications OPEN)

The Alumni Relations Mentorship Associate is a program coordinator for the Minnesota Daily Alumni Association’s (MDAA) yearly mentorship program. The Alumni Relations Mentorship Associate works with the MDAA Mentorship Chair to plan the mentorship program. The Minnesota Daily is looking for individuals that can not only fill the role, but improve upon it.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the MDAA Mentorship Chair to manage all Minnesota Daily employee and alumni mentoring and networking opportunities
  • Develop and execute a mentorship program alongside the MDAA Mentorship Chair
  • Assist with the coordination of the mentorship program mentor/mentee matching process
  • Interpret, evaluate, and synthesize data regarding mentors and mentees to assess the program, provide feedback to stakeholders, and consistently improve the program
  • Collaborate with the Alumni Relations Communications Intern to market the mentorship program to alumni and employees
  • Develop additional initiatives to connect Minnesota Daily employees and alumni
  • Oversee the Daily After Dark networking event program in collaboration with the General Manager, Alumni Relations Director, MDAA Membership Chair, and MDAA Mentorship Chair

Admin Division SALES Positions:

Sales Manager (internal hire)

Department: Admin Division

Reports To: Director of Sales & Executive Director/GM

Hours: 25 hours scheduled around class schedule, during normal business hours
(Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.)

Paid: $16/hr + commissions

The Sales Manager is responsible for managing the MN Daily Media Sales Department. Duties include forecasting and managing revenue budgets/generation, training & development of the sales staff, working with the Executive Director, Director of Sales and staff to develop new products, platforms and services that benefit the Daily and the UMN community. 

The Sales Manager leads and trains a team of account coordinators, account executives and the Assistant Sales Manager. They also work closely with the Business Operations Officer, Marketing Director, Creative Director, Digital Director, and Marketing Department to plan and present comprehensive campaign packages to clients wanting to reach the campus market.

Responsibilities:

  • Set, manage and achieve revenue goals
  • Hire, train, support and supervise account coordinators, executives and the Assistant Sales Manager
  • Monitor sales activity and goals — and analyze performance versus goals
  • Ensure excellent customer service and satisfaction to all customers
  • Conduct weekly sales meetings
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Sales Department
  • Manage sales, production, and placement of ads on all of the MN Daily platforms (i.e. email edition, website, social media, print and outdoor)
  • Set sales and production deadlines; collaborate on the annual publication schedule, including special issues, digital products and the email edition.
  • Provide sales and promotional materials for account executives; suggest ad prospects; coach the team when necessary
  • Develop and maintain relationships with current customers

The Assistant Sales Manager is responsible for helping the Sales Manager manage the MN Daily Media Sales Department. Duties include managing revenue generation, training & development of the sales staff, working with the Business Division and other staff to develop new products, platforms and services that benefit the Daily and the UMN community.

The Assistant Sales Manager helps lead and train a team of account coordinators, account executives with the Sales Manager. They also work closely with the Business Operations Officer, Marketing Director, Creative Director, Digital Director, and Marketing Department to plan and present comprehensive campaign packages to clients wanting to reach the campus market.

Responsibilities:

  • Help make progress toward achieving sales goals
  • Help hire, train, support and supervise account coordinators and account executives
  • Monitor sales activity, help meet sales goals and analyze the overall performance versus the actual goals
  • Help conduct weekly sales meetings
  • Work closely with sales manager on maintaining the sales department, workflows, and providing support as needed
  • Develop and maintain relationships with current customers
  • Meet with clients to discuss their advertising needs
  • Offer opportunities to reach the campus market through Minnesota Daily
  • Develop proposals, solve problems, and provide follow-through
  • Seek opportunities to build relationships with prospective customers
  • Research potential advertisers & create sales pitches to attract new business
  • Provide consistent customer service to accounts in order to ensure their longevity
  • Suggest new product ideas and suggest ad prospects

Qualifications:

Account Executive (applications CLOSED)

Department: Admin Division

Reports To: Director of Sales & Sales Manager

Hours: 20 hours scheduled around class schedule, during normal business hours
(Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.)

Pay: $14.50/hr + commissions

The team of account executives is responsible for supporting the Director of Sales and the Sales Manager by generating revenue that supports the Minnesota Daily. AEs work with local businesses, university groups, and departments and offer access to the University market through digital, online, print and outdoor advertising, promotional events, and other innovative means.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate revenue through advertising sales and marketing promotions

  • Maintain weekly office hours and attend weekly sales meetings

Account Coordinators are responsible for supporting the Sales team by organizational, systemic and logistical assistance. This team works with the MN Daily Sales team to generate revenue that supports the Minnesota Daily and MNDaily.com. ACs work with the Director of Sales, Account Executives and the Executive Director to provide clients, university groups, and departments access to the University of Minnesota market through online and print advertising, promotional events, and other innovative means.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist and support the Sales team in its day-to-day functions and revenue generation operations
  • Develop and maintain relationships with current and prospective customers through team support function
  • Help develop proposals, solve problems, and provide follow-through
  • Help seek opportunities to build relationships with prospective customers
  • Assist in researching potential advertisers & agency clients
  • Provide consistent customer service to accounts
  • Maintain account records by tracking orders, sales goals and payment statuses via the Daily’s CRM platform
