The Suite 450 Agency

The objective of Suite 450 is to give the Business Division a branded identity and to provide its students with an agency-like feel experience. Suite 450 has two goals; to provide students with opportunities for creating real work for local clients while cultivating professional skills, and provide advertisers access to new and innovative ways to market and advertise their business.

Suite 450 will provide students with professional experience in a college setting. We will train, develop, and foster experiences that include account planning, art direction, digital media management, marketing, sales, public relations, and leadership that students can take with them once they step into the real world.

Suite 450 MANAGEMENT Positions:

Business Operations Officer (internal hire)

Department: Business Division

Reports To: MN Daily Board of Directors

Hours: 35-40 hours per week

Paid: Yes

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the Daily’s business operations including Sales, Advertising Production, and Creative departments. Work closely with Marketing Directors and Social Media Managers and others.
  • Manage financial affairs in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Review and assist in the preparation of the appropriate financial reports including projections, budgets, quarterly and annual financial statements, reports of advertising sales and any appropriate cost, revenue, or circulation analyses.
  • Work with controller and sales manager to establish advertising rates and standards of acceptance.
  • Supervise the Daily’s business operations including employees, funds, and property.
  • Support senior managers and solve problems that arise within the Daily’s business operations.
  • Organize the business staff providing for selection, promotion, discipline, and dismissal of staff.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving within the business departments.
  • Oversee training and staff development to ensure quality and diversity.
  • In cooperation with senior managers, develop an annual budget of anticipated expenses for departments subject to the Board’s approval.
  • Consult regularly with the Editor-in-Chief, General Manager, and the Board of Directors to ensure coordinated and efficient operations.
  • Work with the Office of the Publisher and Controller to prepare and present the annual Student Services Fees request.
  • Report all necessary information to the Board including all appointments of directors or managers, all dismissals, all substantial complaints, and changes in managerial or business policies or procedures.
  • Enforce and conform to the policies of the Board.
  • Carry out all other duties delegated by the Board and as laid forth in the Daily’s bylaws.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to hear and speak English clearly.
  • Ability to visually analyze newspaper and online content.
  • Ability to use verbal intelligence to convey ideas, knowledge and thorough critiques for staff members.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a University of Minnesota student, fulfilling registration requirements laid forth in the bylaws.
  • Must have at least one year of successful experience at a newspaper or other business.
  • Must possess an understanding of newspaper operations, journalistic ethics, and appropriate media law.

  • Must exhibit demonstrated management and staff leadership skills, with the ability to manage and motivate a diverse staff and provide an effective training environment.

  • Must be able to handle confidential material.

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to be an effective spokesperson for the Daily and to work effectively with others.

  • Must be creative and drive positive change within the organization.

  • Must be a team player and foster an environment that promotes innovation, development, goal    attainment, and implementation.

Daily Positional Responsibilities:

  • Check the day’s print and online ads, as well as ads scheduled for the following day to check for problems with text, artwork, color reproduction or compliance with advertising acceptance policy.

  • Check the advertising revenue on AdPro to make sure it is on track for the month. Eighty percent of the ad revenue should be scheduled by the end of the second week.

Weekly Positional Responsibilities:

  • Attend a Business and Admin meeting that includes all direct report managers as well as the sales managers

  • Meet with the general manager and editor-in-chief to discuss each division

Monthly Positional Responsibilities:

  • Attend meetings of the Board of Directors

  • Prepare monthly reports for the Board of Directors meetings

  • Have each manager prepare a monthly report and add it to the Google Drive

Semester Positional Responsibilities:

  • Conduct staff performance reviews
  • Complete goals for review by the Board of Directors evaluation committee

  • Have each manager complete goals for the upcoming semester

  • Meet with each manager to approve and discuss their goals

  •  At the end of the semester, prepare follow up information about your goals and meet with the      evaluation committee.

Annual Positional Responsibilities:

  • Formulate a budget with the controller and fellow OP members (summer)

  • Complete budget worksheets for every business manager. (summer)

  • Complete a publication calendar with admin and editorial and be sure to pass it along to ECM (summer)

  • Review the ad acceptance handbook and be sure to update it with any new laws, review it with managers (summer)

  • Ensure that the sales director is assessing the Daily’s current advertising rates and that these rates are comparable to the cost per thousand rates of other college newspapers (summer)

  • Work with the general manager, editor-in-chief, and controller to compile financial information for the student fees request (fall, spring)

Ongoing Positional Responsibilities:

  • Hire new people for the necessary managerial positions; development staff members to fill the leadership pipeline

  • Coordinate training opportunities for staff

  • Reward and discipline staff accordingly

  • Continue to search for new streams of revenue

  • Continue to search for ways to spend money more efficiently and make cuts where they are due

  • Ensure that managers of the advertising production, marketing, and sales departments are reviewing
      the ad acceptance handbook with each new hire

  • Keep track of all contracts and make sure they are being renewed on time

  • Update the managers who are on the CMBAM listserv and the SCS contact names

Suite 450 PHOTOBOOTH Positions:

Suite 450 Photobooth Director (internal hire)

Department: Suite 450

Reports To: Business Operations Officer

Hours: 10-15 per week

Paid: Yes

The PhotoBooth Director runs and manages all Suite 450  Photobooth operations and staff. They coordinate and run weekly meetings, handle all internal staffing issues, assist Sales in seeking new business opportunities, and strive to be a leader and role model for the staff.

Responsibilities

  • Knowledgeable: Have exceptional knowledge of all Photobooth equipment. Be able to solve problems, troubleshoot and answer staff and clients questions.
  • Communication: Be an exceptional communicator
  • Reliability: Must be reliable and accountable for duties and task as assigned as well as being able to answer questions from the staff.
  • Focused: Be able to focus on the tasks at hand during events and attentive at meetings
  • Attitude: Excited and engaging with clients and other team members. Also respectful of leadership staff and employees.

  • Inventory: must keep an inventory of all equipment, extra paper, ribbon, etc. in the office as well as keeping our closet space clean and organized.

Suite 450 Photobooth: Associate (applications OPEN)

Reports To: Suite 450 Photobooth Director

Hours: Varies. Dependent on Suite 450 Photobooth bookings

The Suite 450 Photobooth Associate works Photobooth operations at events and occasions that have hired our services. They are also responsible for organizing set up, take down, preparation and be able to assist in any of the Suite 450 Photobooth operations.

Responsibilities

  • Knowledgeable: Have knowledge of the Photobooth equipment
  • Communication: Be a good communicator
  • Creative: Have the ability to make a custom backdrop and craft props (must be completed at least 3 days before the event)

Sales Manager (internal hire)

The sales manager is responsible for generating all sales revenue for the Minnesota Daily, the independent student-run news organization at the University of Minnesota. This includes print, online advertising, street team, event sales, and development of new products. The manager leads a team of account executives and works closely with the creative, digital, and marketing managers to present a comprehensive package to clients wanting to reach the campus market.

Responsibilities:

  • Set and achieve revenue goals
  • Hire, train, and supervise account executives
  • Monitor sales activity set sales goals, and analyze performance versus goals
  • Ensure excellent customer service and satisfaction
  • Conduct weekly group and individual sales meetings

Director of Marketing Communication (internal hire)

The Marketing Department is a vital component of the Minnesota Daily and mndaily.com, responsible for promoting readership, events, brand management, and more. The Marketing Director of Communications leads the Street Team and assists in all activities related to both internal and external promotion.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with department heads in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of projects, initiatives, improvements, and changes in the organization
  • Plan and coordinate events and activities to promote the Minnesota Daily, expand the organization’s exposure, and build brand awareness across platforms
  • Organize and manage a Street Team for campus engagement activities, including paper handouts, flyering, and marketing events
  • Plan and facilitate the Minnesota Daily’s participation in campus events

Director of Marketing Strategy (internal hire)

The Director of Marketing Strategy is a vital component of the Minnesota Daily and mndaily.com, responsible for promoting readership, brand management, sponsored content, market research and more. The Marketing Manager leads the Sponsored Content Team, while working collaboratively with the Director of Communications, Digital Media Manager, Sales Manager, Creative Director, General Manager, Editor-in-Chief, and Business Operations Officer.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with department heads in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of projects, initiatives, improvements, and changes in the organization
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of in-house promotional campaigns for recruitment, special sections, events, and brand awareness
  • Plan and execute ongoing market research, including surveys, focus groups, and data analysis
  • Manage the Sponsored Content Team and coordinate the writing of sponsored content articles for select publications
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing Communications to create and track annual departmental budget
