A U Card is required for access to Elmer L. Andersen Library until further notice. If you don’t have a U Card, please call 612-624-7469 upon your arrival at Elmer L. Andersen Library to be let into the building. Hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Declaration of Independence, signed at Philadelphia on 4 July 1776, declared that it was “the Right of the People to alter or to abolish” any form of government that becomes destructive of equality and the unalienable rights with which they were endowed and “to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their Safety and Happiness.”
This exhibition draws primarily on materials in the James Ford Bell Library collection. It aims to situate the Declaration in its historical moment and to contextualize the actions of the founders of the new republic.
